As Halloween's popularity continues to grow in Australia, Halloween pumpkins have become readily accessible in supermarkets. If you're looking for a different way to use a 'jack-o'-lantern,' consider crafting a pumpkin fairy house as a delightful departure from the typical spooky pumpkin carvings. This idea is particularly imaginative and engaging for children, as it encourages them to unleash their creativity when designing and embellishing the pumpkins. Here’s what you will need…

Pumpkin (with a flat base)

Safety scissors or a small carving knife

Acrylic paint (assorted colours)

Paintbrush

Craft glue

Natural materials (twigs, leaves, pinecones)

Small LED tea light (optional)

1. Select pumpkin:

Choose a small pumpkin with a flat base for stability. Ensure it's in good condition and clean any dirt or debris from the exterior.

2. Plan your design:

Decide on the design for your mini pumpkin fairy house. Think about features like a door, windows, a thatched roof, and other magical details.

3. Carve the door and windows:

Using safety scissors or a small carving knife, carefully carve a door and windows on your pumpkin. Be cautious, especially when children are involved.

4. Paint the pumpkin:

Use acrylic paint to add colour and personality to your pumpkin. Earthy tones like brown, green, and orange work well for the autumn theme. Get creative with patterns or texture to mimic wood or stone.

5. Decorate with natural materials:

Enhance your fairy house with natural materials like twigs, leaves, or pinecones. Attach them with craft glue to give your fairy house an organic, woodland feel.

6. Add details:

Incorporate charming details like a miniature thatched roof made from twigs or create tiny furniture for the fairy inhabitants. Toothpicks and clay can be used to craft miniature items.

7. Optional illumination:

For a magical touch, place a small LED tea light inside your mini pumpkin fairy house to create a warm, inviting glow. Secure the light source in place.
